We realize that most students have an advantage going into the SAT Test if they have prepared properly. Unfortunately, many students don’t have the time or money to invest in a full Prep course for the SAT.
- Critical Reading
- Mathematics
- Writing, including the new Essay
The review course covers the most important concepts taught during a full SAT Prep course, so that each student will have an understanding of what to look for in every question or reading passage.
Critical Reading
Sentence Completion: students will learn which “transition” words give them important clues to filling in the missing word(s). They will also understand how the “Process of Elimination” will maximize their scores by minimizing their answer choices.
Passage Based Reading: students will practice taking a logical, methodical look at each passage, so that they can “get involved” with the material by effectively highlighting or summarizing each paragraph. They will also learn how to increase their comprehension by first reading the questions for clues - knowing what to look for is the first step to finding the solution.
Writing
The Essay: students will be taught how to correctly discern which topic to write about, how to divide the topic into two possible arguments for maximizing their persuasive platform, and then how to organize their ideas and examples into the strongest format for the short persuasive essay:
1. TELL THEM WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO TELL THEM
2. TELL THEM
3. TELL THEM WHAT YOU TOLD THEM
Identifying Sentence Errors: students will understand how to quickly eliminate extraneous words in each sentence designed to distract them from detecting improper sentence structure. They will recognize the proper pairing of pronouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs that lead to effective and logical expression in a properly constructed sentence.
Improving Sentences/Paragraphs: students will review how to analyze sentences for improper construction, and paragraphs for poor content, then determine how to correctly repair the material using the possible answer choices.
Mathematics Review: 3.0 Hours
The SAT is actually a test designed to measure a student’s ability to detect information and think clearly in order to solve problems. Since math problems require critical thinking skills, the SAT writers use math problems to measure these skills in a variety of ways. During this portion of the SAT Power Review, the students will review every “must know” math fact/concept used on the SAT test, including:
· Basic Number Definitions and Operations
· Reciprocals, Factors, Remainders and Ratios
· Absolute Values and Averages - Means, Medians, Modes
· Percentages and Exponents
· Geometry: Lines, Angles, Circles, Arcs and Sectors
· Geometry: Triangles, Pythagorean Theorem
· Geometry: Volumes, Quadrilaterals, Special Right Triangles
The SAT test also uses several “creative” word problems to analyze a student’s ability to recognize patterns and solve problems using:
· Algebra and Number Sequences
· Number Unions and Functions
· Probability, Combinations and Permutations
· Ratios, Direct and Inverse Proportions
· Slopes, Radical Equations, and Work/Rate Problems
These kinds of math problems are practiced by the students using strategies and shortcuts designed to find the correct answer in the shortest amount of time. After this Review, your student will know if they are ready for the test, or need more instruction/practice.
